How One Runner's First Marathon Became A Community Celebration
From Hopkinton to Boston, Danica ran for kindness, resilience, and hope - making every mile count with the support of our community.
By Spark Kindness Team
On April 20th, 2026, amid the energy and tradition of the 130th Boston Marathon, something special happened on the course, and it had everything to do with the dedicated Spark Kindness community. Spark's 2026 Boston Marathon runner, Danica Champion, crossed the iconic Boylston Street finish line, completing her first-ever marathon. And she didn't just finish the marathon — she also met her fundraising goal, thanks to the generosity of supporters in Natick, MetroWest, and beyond.
Danica is a Natick resident, a mom of two, and has been an ESL teacher for the past 11 years, working hard to ensure all children and their families feel welcomed, supported, and respected, no matter what. Having only run half marathons in the past, she was thrilled to run her first marathon in Boston, supporting Spark Kindness. Every dollar raised helped sustain Spark's free community programming and resources focusing on building resilient communities that are inclusive and welcoming to all.
A Race That Meant More Than Miles
More than 29,000 runners from around the world took to the streets this year, starting in Hopkinton, running through the suburban communities (shout-out to Mile 10 in Natick!), and finishing after turning the famous left onto Boylston Street in Boston. For Danica, it was the race of a lifetime, but it was also something deeper. Every mile she ran carried with it a message: that kindness matters, that community matters, and that we all have the power to make our world a little more humane.
Danica reflected that "running the Boston Marathon for Spark Kindness has been one of the most incredible experiences of my life. I knew for my first ever marathon I would want it to be Boston, and also a cause that is near and dear to my heart. With the current events of our country and world, we have seen such a decline of basic human decency, empathy, and kindness."
Being able to train and run 26.2 miles, while raising money for an amazing organization working to make our communities kinder and more inclusive for all, has been incredibly powerful. Every run I did not feel like going on, or every mile I did not know if I would complete during the marathon, I would think of my children, my students, our immigrant neighbors, my family, and many others, and it would give me the strength to continue.
— Danica Champion, Spark's 2026 Boston Marathon Runner
Danica continued: "So many family, friends, and colleagues showed up for me to support my run and cheer for me on the day, and that was one of the most humbling and powerful bonus experiences of the whole process. I felt the love and support, and what Spark professes really is true: Kindness Connects Us."
The Community That Carried Her To The Finish
Behind every mile Danica ran, there was a donor, a cheerleader, a friend who shared a link, a colleague who gave when it mattered. The $7500 fundraising goal that once seemed distant was reached, because this community showed truly what Spark Kindness is about. Not grand gestures, but instead the accumulation of small, meaningful acts of generosity that add up in a big way. Danica's race was a living example of the Spark Kindness mission in motion.
A huge shout-out to Danica for her courage, her heart, and her willingness to carry Spark's mission on her back — literally — for 26.2 miles. And thank you to every single person who gave, cheered, shared, and believed!
